The Single Room Occupancy(SRO) Task Force was first established by the Board of Supervisors under the title SRO Health; Stabilization and Safety Task Force in August 1999 in a response to a rash of fires in residential hotels that resulted in the elimination of over 900 residential guest rooms from 1988.
Since the subsequent adoption and implementation of the Residential Hotel Sprinkler Ordinance, the Task Force was reconfigured and renamed by the Board of Supervisors in 2006. There are currently 13 members authorized by Board Resolution No.582-10, with 9 appointments by the Board and 4 members appointed by the Director of the Human Services Agency( 1 member), Director of the Department of Building Inspection (1 member), and the Director of the Department of Public Health (1 member from Environmental Health and 1 member from Housing and Urban Health).
Mission Statement:
The SRO Task Force mission is to improve the quality of life for residents living in SRO hotels by providing discussion between city departments, SRO owners/managers, nonprofit agencies, and tenants. The Task Force responsibility is to then advise San Francisco policy makers on policies, codes, and legislation that impact residents, owners, and managers of SRO Hotels and to serve as a conduit for consensus between stake holders. The Task Force purpose is to then facilitate a unified SRO hotel strategy that is supported by the Mayor, the Board of Supervisors, City departments, nonprofit agencies, owners, managers, tenants and the community at large.
