Starting the Public Records Request Process:

If you would like to request the reproduction of public records within the Department's possession, please take the following steps below. 

  1. Complete the Records Request form to the best of your ability. Fill out the form here. Submitting incomplete forms will delay processing of your request.
  2. Submit your completed form using one of the three options below: 
    • Recommended Option: Visit our offices at 49 South Van Ness Avenue, Suite 400, San Francisco. Customer Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Make sure to sign in no later than 3:30 p.m. to ensure you will be assisted the same day. EXCEPTION: On Wednesdays our offices open to the public at 9:00 a.m.
    • Email the form to dbi.records3r@sfgov.org . You will receive a confirmation email within 48 hours of receipt.
    • Send the form by mail to:

  3. We accept six (6) total requests per business day per applicant. We consider an applicant to be a company, individual or organization. A request form for each property address is required.
  4. Bring your receipt & photo ID when picking up records in person when applicable.
  5. If you request hardcopy printouts, there is a $0.10 cents fee per page.

Requesting Copies of Plans

We are not able to reproduce plan sets without the approval of the current property owner and design professionals listed on the plan sets, per the California Health and Safety Code, which prohibits the duplication of the official building plans, or documents such as reports and calculations found in the plans.
