DBI is the regulatory building safety agency responsible for overseeing the effective and efficient enforcement of building, electrical, plumbing, disability access and housing codes for the City and County of San Francisco’s more than 200,000 commercial and residential buildings.

You can call us or go online to file a complaint about a building or construction project, or give feedback about DBI.

Expanded Compliance Control Program
The Expanded Compliance Control Program  was created in 2021 as a way to ensure that contractors, design professionals, building owners, and their agents fully comply with the City of San Francisco’s Building Code.
 

Online Services

 
Permit applications for Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) or related ADU construction work can be submitted using an online form through the City's website here. Your application will be processed by SF Planning using the Electronic Plan Review process. If you submitted an ADU request to DBI after August 17, you will be contacted by SF Planning staff with more information.

C-39 licensed contractors can file their reroofing permits online after they register for a contractor's account with DBI. Please visit here for more information and to start the registration process today.  
 
Contractors with a registered DBI account can apply for electrical, plumbing, mechanical, Boiler-to-Operate, reroofing, or kitchen/bath remodel permits online. Contractors without an online account and homeowners needing to obtain permits can contact DBI staff.
