DBI is the regulatory building safety agency responsible for overseeing the effective and efficient enforcement of building, electrical, plumbing, disability access and housing codes for the City and County of San Francisco’s more than 200,000 commercial and residential buildings.
 
The Department of Building Inspection has moved to 49 South Van Ness Avenue. Please note our new address.
 
The Department of Building Inspection's office at 49 South Van Ness Avenue is partially closed to the public. Our staff is answering calls and emails and providing permit and inspection services. We are available Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm.
 
We are providing limited permit services for OTC with and without plans applications.

Limited Permit Types Accepted Online

As of August 17, 2020, we are temporarily limiting the types of permits that may be submitted online through the digital permit submission process.

Track your Permit & Complaint Online

Visit the Permit & Complaint Tracking System to monitor the progress of your project or complaint filed with DBI.

File your Trades and Homeowners Permit

Contractors with a registered DBI account can apply for plumbing, electrical and Boiler-to-Operate permits online. Contractors without an online account and homeowners needing to obtain permits can contact DBI staff.

Schedule Inspections Online

You may call or contractors with a registered DBI account can schedule the inspection online. 

File a Complaint

You may call or go online to file a complaint with DBI relating to the following: building, plumbing, electrical, housing, disability access, and other construction-related complaints.
