SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Mayor Gavin Newsom has announced his appointment of Vahid Sattary, PhD., to serve on the city’s Building Inspection Commission. Vahid was born in Iran and became a US Citizen in August 1998.  Dr. Sattary is the principal engineer of Sattary Structural and Earthquake Engineering.  He has over 20 years experience in structural engineering and seismic design including the state-of-the-art design of seismic productive systems, base isolation and energy dissipation application in buildings. 


Dr. Sattary has worked on a variety of building and structural projects including New Building Design for the University of California’s Haas Pavilion and San Francisco State’s Gymnasium Natatorium and Office Building. His work in Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit Design projects include SFSU University North Park, University of California’s Memorial Stadium and Dal Grauer Substation, Vancouver, BC Canada.  Other projects reflective of Dr. Sattary’s extensive experience includes his work with Special Seismic Protective Systems, Hospital and Educational Building projects, Structural Peer Review Projects and Seismic Hazard Assessment and PML Studies.

Vahid is an accomplished engineer whose expertise will certainly help advance the goals of the Building Inspection Commission,” added the Mayor.


Vahid has written and co-authored a variety of publications and treatises on the subject of building inspection and structural design including Analytical Studies of Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls, Earthquake Load on R/C Beams: Building versus Single Beam, Repair of Five Historic Buildings Damaged by the Lorna Prieta Earthquake and Critical Engineering Issues in a Seismic Isolation Design.  Dr. Sattary is a registered Structural Engineer and Civil Engineer in California and a Registered Structural/Civil Engineer in Nevada.  Vahid has a Ph.D in Structural Engineering and a M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI and a B.S. in Civil Engineering, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL.


The mission of the seven-member citizen Building Inspection Commission is to oversee the effective, efficient, fair and safe enforcement of the City and County of San Francisco’s Building, Housing, Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical, and Disability Access Codes.
