SAN FRANCISCO – The seven-member Building Inspection Commission (BIC), the policy-making and supervisory body that oversees the City’s Department of Building Inspection (DBI), today announced at a Special Commission meeting its selection of Isam Hasenin, to serve as DBI’s new permanent Director. He will assume the Director’s responsibilities effective March 19, 2007.


“We’ve engaged a leader with outstanding qualifications and experience to take over the Director’s helm at DBI,” observed Debra Walker, President of the BIC, “and a person everyone on our Commission is confident will continue the reforms already under way within DBI.  The entire Commission joins me in saluting the highly effective interim leadership provided by Acting Director Amy Lee and by DBI’s excellent management and staff. We’re equally appreciative of Mayor Newsom’s strong support for the improvements we’ve achieved in DBI’s permit, inspection and code enforcement processes.”


Mayor Newsom, who attended the Commission’s meeting, said “Mr.Hasenin has developed a reputation as a national leader in his field. His technical experience and management capabilities will be a tremendous asset to the Department. He brings a tremendous level of professionalism to the Department as we continue to implement the reforms and process improvements begun under Director Lee.”


“I’m honored to have guided DBI through a crucial transition period and to have advanced crucial reforms at DBI,” said Acting Director Amy Lee.  “It is an indication that the Department is on the right track that we were able to recruit such a highly qualified new Director.”


Board of Supervisors’ President Aaron Peskin, added: “My colleagues and I at the Board are committed to taking appropriate and necessary steps to support both the Commission’s and DBI’s important work.  We value the progress made within DBI over the past two years in terms of improved process, reduced waiting times and better customer services – and we certainly look forward to working with Mr. Hasenin and to supporting his efforts to make the department more efficient, accountable and transparent.”


Recognized as one of California’s experts on building codes, Mr.Hasenin serves as the Vice Chair of the prestigious California Building Standards Commission, the body responsible for adopting and implementing building codes state-wide. He also serves on the International Code Council (ICC)’s Education Committee responsible for training and education for its 50,000-member organization.  He holds an M.S., Civil Engineering degree, from Pennsylvania State University. Among his numerous recent accomplishments, Mr. Hasenin created and managed the Division of Building Safety & Construction Permits, and centralized all reviews and inspections to streamline and enhance customer services.  Highlights of his background, expertise and experience are attached.


The Department of Building Inspection’s mission is to oversee the effective, efficient, fair and safe enforcement of the City and County of San Francisco’s building, housing, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and disability access codes required to oversee San Francisco’s more than 150,000 building inventory.  The BIC is comprised of seven members, four of whom are appointed by the Mayor and three by the President of the Board of Supervisors.  Please visit for more detailed information.
