Statement by Amy Lee
Department of Building Inspection
July 26, 2006
The Department of Building Inspection was notified by the FBI early this morning that as part of its ongoing investigation over past legally questionable activities within the department, it was gathering documents from one employee’s office. This action was apparently related to an earlier ongoing investigation stemming from an incident last year involving a developer who had been cited by DBI for exceeding the scope of his permits.
DBI continues to cooperate fully with law enforcement authorities on such matters, just as we continue to take steps to make the department more professional, more accountable and more effective in fulfilling our public service responsibilities for the building safety of all San Franciscans.
While we regret that even a very limited number of DBI employees may have engaged in legally questionable activities, we urge everyone to remember that the overwhelming majority of our more than 350 employees are ethical, dedicated and highly competent professionals who are playing vital roles in the safety and well-being of everyone living and working in our City.
DBI will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement authorities, just as we’ll continue the reform efforts already under way over this past year to ensure that the Department performs effectively, ethically and efficiently on behalf of San Francisco’s building safety.
