Call to Order and Roll Call
Members: Jim Guthrie, S.E.; Chair; Ned Fennie, AIA; Michael Fretz, S.E.


Meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m. Quorum established with 2 members present. 

2.0

Approval of the minutes of the Structural Subcommittee special meeting of April 13, 2004.

The minutes was amended as follows:

A motion to approve the minutes as amended. Seconded and approved.

3.0

Continue discussion and possible action on Special inspection requirements for signs and awnings.

Minimum size and embedment of bolts are discussed, and concluded as below:

For awnings and canopies designed per code, special inspection on anchor bolts will be waived if:

All bolts are torque tested per ICBO report, and
Minimum size of bolts is 3/8 inch in diameter with a minimum of 4 bolts and a minimum embedment of 3 inches or as required per manufacturer’s recommendations, whichever is greater, and

 

(3)

For masonry, use only epoxy bolts. No expansion anchors allowed in masonry.
Both epoxy and expansion bolts are acceptable in concrete.

 

For signs not over 24 sq. ft. in area, special inspection on anchor bolts will be waived if:

structural calculations are submitted showing that the stress level is not more than 25% of the design allowables, and

Other requirements are as per minutes of the Structural Subcommittee meeting on February 10, 2004.

Hanson Tom would draft memorandum based on guidelines above.

Continue discussion on possible update to Structural Standards in 2002 California Building Standards Code.

It appears that Building Standard Commission may not likely incorporate these supplements in the 2004 California Building Code.

The Structural Subcommittee would recap the conclusions reached in the past meeting and continue discussions on the open issues. 

5.0

Continue discussion and possible action on preliminary results of CAPSS program.

The Building Inspection Commission is currently working on finalizing the report titled San Francisco’s Earthquake Risk:   Report on Potential Earthquake Impacts in San Francisco, as part of the CAPSS program.



6.0

Continue discussion on DBI requirements for geotechnical reports. (DBI staff report)

Awaiting Hanson Tom to review and markup draft administrative bulletin.

7.0

Subcommittee Member’s and Staff’s identification of new agenda items, as well as current agenda items to be continued to another subcommittee regular meeting or special meeting.  Subcommittee discussion and possible action regarding administrative issues related to building codes.

Current items 4.0 thru 6.0 will be continued in the next regular meeting.

Add new item on Discussion on MEP support and bracing.

Public Comment: Public comment will be heard on items not on this agenda but within the jurisdiction of the Code Advisory Committee.  Comment time is limited to 3 minutes per person or at the call of the Chair.
