1.0           Call to Order and Roll Call
Members: Ned Fennie, AIA; Michael Fretz, S.E.

Meeting was called to order at 2:15 p.m. Quorum established with 2 members present.

2.0          Approval of the minutes of the Structural Subcommittee regular meeting of July 3, 2002.

Jim proposed to amend the minutes by revising the 3rd paragraph of item 4.0 to read as follows:

Our discussion on inspection on deterioration of existing wood decks would be reported to CAC.

3.0          Discussion of SFBC Section 3403 on Seismic Triggering.

Ned’s revised flowchart diagram on seismic triggering was discussed. Dave had forwarded to Hanson Tom and Laurence Kornfield a copy of the diagram for review.

The purpose of the diagram is to serve as tool for CAPSS, or as an Administrative Bulletin.

The box: “Build new area and common elements to CBC Standards/Continue vertical load paths to foundation are adequate w/ new loads, upgrade if required” was discussed. It was questioned whether seismic upgrade to full CBC Standards is required for vertical addition. The new addition itself needs to meet full CBC Standards ,but the lower portion may be designed for seismic forces of not less than 75% of CBC Standards. Furthermore, near field factors, load factors, deformation, separation limitation, height-to-length ratio, R, etc. may be as per SFBC Section 1605.4.3.

Also “vertical load paths” need to be clarified since lateral loads are also involved.

It is also suggested to delete the boxes “Is the renovation project contained an entirely on one floor? “ and “Upgrade of floor of Project and all floors below to SFBC standards.”
(SFBC 3405)
