After extensive review, DBI Technical Services Division (TSD) recommends that the Department's long-standing interpretation that a 36" guardrail height is allowed on exterior decks and balconies in the occupancies noted in Sec. 509.2, Exception 1. The possible action will be to make a recommendation to TSD regarding the direction for the development of an Administrative Bulletin clarifying local interpretation, intent and allowable minimum height for guardrails in residential occupancies as required by this code section.
